MDCEP Recognizes Staff Union

The Maryland Center on Economic Policy (MDCEP), a nonpartisan research and policy organization focused on policies that allow all Marylanders to thrive in a healthy economy, today voluntarily recognized a staff union represented by the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union (NPEU), the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers Local 70.

“We are immensely proud of the work we do as employees of MDCEP. By joining together in a labor union, we aim to foster an equitable workplace and a culture of cooperative problem-solving. When working people have a voice on the job, it helps us build an economy that works for everyone,” employees involved in the organizing effort said.

“MDCEP’s leadership supports the right of our staff members to join a union, as we advocate for the rights of all Marylanders to organize in their workplaces,” MDCEP Executive Director Benjamin Orr said. “The initial conversations with NPEU have focused on shared values and commitment to making MDCEP as effective as possible in advancing our organization’s mission.”

In moving to create a union, MDCEP staff joined unionized peers at its national partner organizations, the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities and the Economic Policy Institute, which are also represented by NPEU.
